NEW PERSPECTIVES
FOR SURINAME

Just off the coast of Suriname’s most western city, Nickerie, major reserves of Oil & Gas have been discovered.

This creates new perspectives. For Suriname’s economy as well as her people.

With technical advisement from the Port of Rotterdam, N.V. Havenbeheer Suriname and the Phoenix Development Company are developing one of the greenest ports in the world.

The current nature and biodiversity, including in Bigi Pan, requires an ecologically responsible approach, especially now that the coast has become more vulnerable due to the rise in sea level.

The Port of Nickerie offers a better perspective for our customers, the economic future of Suriname, the Surinamese population and the strategic location of Suriname in the region.

WHY THE PORT OF NICKERIE?

For Suriname to truly benefit from the oil and gas resources, it must ready itself. Through the development of modern industrial facilities, a foundational piece of infrastructure is transformed into a flywheel that accelerates the economic
development, and elevates Suriname’s global position.

The strategic location at the center of the Suriname-Guyana Basin allows for the most efficient servicing of the largest area of the basin, and open the export capacity of the Guyanas and Northern Brazil.

We are in a time of great change all over the world. This new world requires quick decisions, and wide flexibility. Particularly in the cases of energy, the energy transition, and the shift to a sustainable future; the urgency for the valuable role that this port in Suriname can play in the world is mounting.

The Port of Nickerie and Special Economic Zone will enable the Government of Suriname to bring real sustainable prosperity to its population.

“We must have the courage
to give our children more opportunities
and dare to choose a new future,
one where we share the energy of Suriname
with the world.
The new future starts here!”

ON OUR WAY TO
50 YEARS OF SURINAME

We develop the port, we create reserve zones to protect our nature and coastline. And then we attract investors to develop the Special Economic Zone and build up our capacity as a hub.
We are working towards having the first LNG ships depart from Suriname in 2025.

On November 25, 2025 we will celebrate our 50th anniversary as an independent nation. Let’s make sure, we have great reason to party.
